New NHS e-journals - a great Christmas present!

The East of England NHS libraries’ Christmas present is a new, wide selection of electronic journals.
63 new e-journals will be available online to all NHS staff in the East of England from 1st January 2008 - you can still log into http://journals.library.nhs.uk/ to see if the journal you need is available.

Something for all the NHS family
Carefully selected by East of England librarians to cover as many specialities and professions as possible, the journals range from Spine to Circulation and from American Journal of Occupational Therapy to Accident and Emergency Nursing. The New England Journal of Medicine and The Lancet are in there, and so is Journal of Advanced Nursing.

Also under the Christmas tree
The National Library for Health is revamping its collections, so from January the whole country will be able to use the Journal of the American Medical Association and its Archives journals.

They’re also buying the BMJ collection from April - that’s 21 journals including the BMJ itself - but here in the East we’re topping that up so that you can start using them wherever you are on New Year’s Day!

Non-medical staff aren’t forgotten nationally, either - hundreds of journals indexed in CINAHL will be available full text online from April 2008. And the Proquest database of 1700 journals, which the national library has to cut to afford the bigger journals, will still be available in the East for the year to come.

Unwrapping the presents
All you need to get in to these journals, from any internet-connected computer, is an NHS Athens password. You can view all the journals involved from http://www.eel.nhs.uk/eel/whatsinthebox.htm.

Specialist Libraries

The National Library for Health has provided 3 new specialist libraries: Neurological Conditions, Public Health, Stroke

Neurological Conditions
The Neurological Conditions Specialist Library (NCSL) aims to provide access to the best available evidence within neurological conditions to NHS healthcare professionals. Although targeted at health professionals; patients, carers and the general public will find useful information on the site.
The NCSL is supported by a Clinical Lead, editorial board, an information support team and by the wider stakeholder community.

Public Health
This library is a constantly developing resource and information will be updated frequently. The resources for the three priority areas: tobacco, alcohol, obesity.
Resources for the other Choosing Health topic areas will be added soon. Resources for other public health categories will be added over the next 4 months.

Stroke
The Stroke Specialist Library is being developed to provide high quality, evidence-based information on all of aspects of Stroke. This site is aimed at health professionals with an interest in Stroke.

This new RSS feed has all you need to keep yourself up to date with the minimum effort with news stories about Addenbrooke's with just one click.

Add the feed to your reader to be alerted when new stories appear.

ejournals@cambridge links in Google Scholar

As part of the upgraded ejournals@cambridge service, we have recently introduced a new feature for users of Google Scholar. When viewing search results in Google Scholar, ejournals@cambridge links can now be displayed that link to Cambridge appropriate full text ejournal holdings.

Users accessing Google scholar from a machine on the Cambridge domain should see these links automatically. Those working from outside of the domain will have to set their link preferences in Google Scholar. To do this:

• Go to the initial Google Scholar search screen
• Click on the preferences link by the search box.
• Follow the instructions under 'library links' and search for ejournals@cambridge.
• A list of linking options should now appear
• Select ejournals@cambridge and save your selection

Similar links have been activated in other abstract and index database platforms subscribed to by Cambridge University Library, including Cambridge Scientific Abstracts, Ovid and ISI Web of Science / Knowledge.

Central Science Library review questionnaire

The University Library Syndicate has appointed a review group to undertake a feasibility study on the the future of the Central Science Library (CSL) services and building.
In order to help the review group be better informed about the type of library service required by academic colleagues, post-graduates and under-graduates, and to plan for future services, you are invited to complete a questionnaire, which should take no longer than 5 minutes to complete.
Please note that you will require a Raven password to complete this questionnaire which will be available until Friday 30 November 2007.

UpToDate is specifically designed to answer the clinical questions that arise in daily practice and to do so quickly and easily so that it can be used right at the point of care.
The topics are written exclusively for UpToDate by clinicians for clinicians - more than 3,300 clinicians serve as authors. The content is comprehensive yet concise and it's fully referenced. It goes through an extensive peer review process to ensure that the information and recommendations you access from our service are accurate and reliable.

Renew your book loans online

As well as being able to renew the loan of your library books by phone and by email, we're delighted to offer online self-renewal of loans.

For any book or CD that is borrowed from the Medical Library after 24th September 2007, you can renew the loan yourself via "Your Account" in Newton, the Library Catalogue.

The current restrictions still apply: you can only renew loans once, and you cannot renew the loan of a book that has been reserved by another reader.

Building Works & Noise Disruption

From Monday 3rd September 2007, building work will be carried out on the fire escape located between the Clinical School and the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology.

Saturdays are likely to be particularly disrupted, as work is carried out at the weekends.

Card Entry System for Clinical School

Clinical School announcement: From 10th September 2007, the card entry system will be switched on.

Anybody wishing to enter the the Clinical School building, which houses the Medical Library, between 7.00pm and 9.45pm Monday to Friday, and between 9.00am and 4.45pm Saturdays will need to swipe their Addenbrooke's Hospital ID badge.

Please remember to bring your Medical Library card with you on all visits.

Direct Delivery for article requests

The Medical Library is pleased to be able to offer an improved service for readers wishing to order copies of journal articles.

Introducing : EMAIL DIRECT & POST DIRECT

Email Direct is a method of secure electronic delivery (SED) of documents as an Adobe PDF file direct to your desktop.

Post Direct delivers documents by post direct to you – no need to come to the library to collect them!

From 1st September 2007 most documents requested as photocopies via Inter Library Loans (ILL) will be delivered in one of these 2 ways.

University ATHENS – Major changes to access control to electronic resources

From September 2007 Cambridge University Library and the University Computing Service will be introducing a replacement for the ATHENS authentication system.

Although current unexpired ATHENS accounts will continue to work during this Academic Year the University will not create or distribute any new ATHENS accounts. All new users will use RAVEN to authenticate themselves as current staff or students of the University and obtain access to ATHENS protected services. Existing ATHENS users are encouraged to move to using RAVEN during this year.

PLEASE NOTE THIS SERVICE IS NOT YET FULLY AVAILABLE and until further notice you may continue to contact lib-athens@lists.cam.ac.uk regarding ATHENS account maintenance.RAVEN is already used for access to certain electronic resources as indicated on the Electronic Resources database. You should continue to follow the access routes indicated on the University Library Electronic Services webpages.

This change is part of a national strategy by the JISC on behalf of Higher and Further Education to take advantage of new technology and international standards and adoption of a “federated” approach to access management. For the end user one immediate benefit will be the need to remember one less password.

ATHENS protected resources will continue to be available via a “Gateway” service until at least 2011 which will enable you to login to the MyATHENS webpage and navigate to ATHENS protected services using your RAVEN account rather than your old ATHENS account. However previously set personal preferences will not be carried forward to your new “identity” as established by the Gateway and you will need to reset your customisations.
